Able to print Statement 1 but not statement 2?

I am trying get all the file names inside a directory. I am able to print Statement 1(which is length of array) but not able to print statement 2(which is the length of same array). For example- if inside a directory i have 8 files. Statement 1 prints as 8 but statement 2 as 0. Can anybody tell me what mistake i am doing. Attached one image for code.
